OUR FUNDRAISING INITIATIVES

By supporting Tonbridge you will be part of a wonderful philanthropic community helping us to attract and retain the very best teachers and pupils and to provide an inspirational environment for world-class teaching and learning for future generations.

Sir Andrew Judde was a philanthropist and visionary who recognised the importance of education and service, regardless of background. He founded the School in 1553, with the specific purpose of educating 50 poor scholars. His aim was to provide a transformative education for its students, setting them on paths that would have been inconceivable without such an opportunity. It is his vision of looking ahead that we seek to continue. If you would like to find out how your support can transform lives, please get in touch.

Foundation Awards Programme

The Foundation Awards bursary programme is at the heart of our widening opportunity work. It is designed to offer the life-changing opportunities of a Tonbridge education to young people of talent and ambition who simply cannot afford the fees.

We know that the benefits to the whole Tonbridge community, and beyond, are deeply enhanced and enriched with a student body that more accurately reflects the world in which they live and the world that they enter when they leave.

Our aim is to increase the number of Foundation Awards recipients to 100 in the School at any one time. We have made huge strides to widen access over the last 15 years and to share our skills and resources more broadly in our local community. As a result, we currently provide financial support to 67 boys in the School.

The 1553 Society

The 1553 Society is our regular giving club for all Old Tonbridgians, parents and friends of the School. We hope that all Tonbridgians continue a long-standing tradition of giving something back to Tonbridge and will feel a sense of pride to do so.

Donations are essential, particularly if on a regular basis as they provide essential and predictable support for the School, year on year, whilst also allowing supporters to plan their giving. We are enormously grateful for everyone’s support. It does not matter how small or large, every gift makes a difference and brings us closer to doubling the number of bursary recipients at Tonbridge School.

The Judde Society

The Judde Society is for anyone who has pledged to leave a gift in their will. Gifts to the School are an important element of our fundraising programme and help to fund our Foundation Awards programme as well as preserve our wonderful buildings and grounds.
Since its foundation in 1553, legacies have played a pivotal role in securing a future for Tonbridge School. The School's founder, Sir Andrew Judde, is also its first legator. He left property in London as an endowment for the School, helping its financial viability beyond his death in 1558.
It seems fitting, therefore, to honour our legacy donors with the name ‘The Judde Society’, remembering Sir Andrew Judde's generosity.

Giving Day

Giving Day, which takes place at the end of the Summer Term, is our flagship fundraising initiative to widen access to the amazing opportunities that a Tonbridge education provides.

Since the School’s inaugural event in 2021, the total sum raised by Giving Day for the Foundation Awards bursary programme stands at more than £2 million. Giving Day 2024 was supported by 680 donors as well as match funders, challenge gift sponsors, boys, parents, staff and the wider School community of OTs and friends.

Telephone Campaign

The Telephone Campaign is run by the Tonbridge Society with the specific objectives of raising money for the School’s priorities, in particular Foundation Award bursaries, and updating the community on forthcoming events and School news.
Since 2006, our callers have raised over £1.0 million to support regular giving.
Thank you to everyone we have spoken to over the last 17 years, and especially to those who have also donated.

Recognising your Generosity

It is important to us to show our appreciation for the generous support which helps to make such a great difference.
We want donating to Tonbridge to always be a positive process and, should you wish it, a sociable one.
To this end, we have established recognition groups that aim to bring together like-minded individuals at bespoke events and activities throughout the year. All our donors will be recognised in our Impact Report and invited each year to a special summer thank-you reception hosted by the Headmaster.

Your Impact

Through landmark gifts from individual donors and regular donations from our parents, OTs and friends of the School, we have been able to make an incredible difference.
In 2012, we launched the Excellence For All campaign to develop the biggest transformation of the School campus since the Victorian era. In 2018, this work was completed at a final investment of £35 million, having raised over £9.5 million for projects including Old Big School Gallery, the Smythe Library and Learning Centre, and the Barton Science Centre, as well as enabling us to provide more Foundation Award places.
